Our team was seeking to revitalize this unused, neglected space since the founding of our club. We wanted to make a difference in the lives of the students and staff at the architecture school.
Situated below the main entry of the Architecture Building, this ignored garden bed has been neglected for years with nothing but weeds occupying the space. The garden requires a low-maintenance intervention to secure its longevity.
The Grotto's design draws inspiration from the serenity and simplicity of Zen gardens. A harmonious and tranquil outdoor space was created by embracing minimalism, clean lines, balanced elements, and a carefully curated plant palette.

Existing Conditions
The three-person team that designed and realized the project comprises Cameron Penney, Juan Ramirez, and Red Narvasa.
After two days and 20 hours of work, the team completed the garden on August 12, 2023.

Intervention Design + Specifications
The design incorporates elements such as vibrant marble stone, strategically placed aged rocks, and carefully selected trees and shrubs to provide a resilient, low maintenance, and inspiring design strategy for critically located garden.
About Labscape Lab
The Landscape Lab was founded in 2022 by Master of Architecture students Cameron Penney and Jillian Weinberger and is open to all students at Carleton University.
The club is dedicated to exploring the art and science of designing outdoor spaces. Through weekly meetings, design competitions, plant sales, and field trips, the group delves into landscape architecture, sustainable landscapes, urban planning, and environmental conservation. The goal is to inspire a greater appreciation for the natural world, foster creativity, and promote sustainable practices within the Carleton community.
